In Memory of John Carver
Creator of the Policy Governance(R) Model

I thought that this might be of interest to those of you who have some familiarity with the Policy Governance(R) Model of board governance or some level of interest in it.

Below I have included information disseminated by GOVERN for IMPACT (formerly the International Policy Governance Association), an international non-profit organization dedicated to promoting excellent governance through the Policy Governance(R) Model and best practice insights and approaches from other governance sources.

Also, Larry Spears, my co-author for the book Better Boards for a Better World: An Integrated Practice of Policy Governance(R) and Servant-Leadership shared a link to several brief You-Tube video clips from his interview with John Carver. I thought you might be interested in checking these out to hear John Carver describe his Policy Governance(R) Model and its relationship to Servant-Leadership. Just click on

In Memory of John Carver Who Passed Away Friday, August 16, 2024

It is with great sadness and admiration that I advise the GOVERN for IMPACT community and all or our contacts, of the passing of Dr. John Carver, on Friday, August 16, 2024. Please see the obituary below provided to us by Miriam Carver.

John, along with his life partner and colleague Miriam Carver has truly contributed to positive world impact through his work in governance and the design and development of the Policy Governance(R) system.

John developed a unique theoretical framework for governance, the Policy Governance Model. He taught, facilitated, and coached both boards and consultants worldwhile. John and John's work have had a profound effect on challenging the paradigms of governance thinking and behaviors through providing an effective system and framework for governance which fundamentally ensures governance is ownership (careholdership/primary stakeholdership) informed, purpose-driven, ethical and prudent accountable governance.

I know that the GOVERN community will want to show their respects and admiration. GOVERN for IMPACT is also doing the same. We will initiate the launch of a scholarship fund in John's name at GOVERN for IMPACT. We will be working with Miriam Carver and the GOVERN Board of Directors to further discuss the focus and work of this scholarship and fund. As the GOVERN community knows, we are working hard to bring younger leaders into awareness and knowledge of Policy Governance as they will be so needed in the future of our world of effective governance. There will be a celebration some time in the future in Atlanta, likely in October 2024. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

I had the extreme privilege and opportunity to know John Carver personally, and to learn from his ideas and teaching. The concepts that I learned were life-changing for my governance work and consulting. Rarely, do we get to meet and have relationships with people who literally have a global effect. John Carver was one of those people, and I personally consider it one of the huge privileges of my life. I know so many of you join me in this perspective.

With sadness at this time,
Karen Fryday-Field
